To say the Cederberg is unique is simply an understatement. It is a collection of mountains, valleys, canyons, rocky summits. streams and wild  remote plateaux of unspeakable beauty. A place that just keeps unfolding the more you explore and keeps on giving the more adventurous you become. The Cederberg is also much more than just a mountain range. It is a place steeped in history where people have lived, worked and farmed for many generations. It is the home of Rooibos tea, the Cape mountain leopard and boasts the highest vineyard in South Africa, yielding some of the finest wines in the country. For more leisurely days, explore the Stadsaal caves and rock formations, go wine tasting at Cederberg cellars or enjoy a lazy day down at the Maalgat pools.

Day outings

One of the most popular one day outings which is a must for all visitors and locals alike is the impressive and unforgettable hike up and through the Wolfberg Cracks, and across to the Wolfberg Arch. We started our hike through the Wolfberg Cracks at about 09h00 which was a little later than we had intended because we were delayed getting the permit from the office. The drive from Sanddrif where we were staying to the start of the hike is spectacular as the road winds through the valley of the Red Gods, an amazing display of unique Sandstone rock formations.

The car parking area is in the shade of old established oak trees about 100 meters from the official start of the hike. The path up to the the start of the narrow crack is just over one kilometre of hiking and is quite well marked but but one can take a wrong turn very easily. There are 2 options  through the crack the wide crack or  the narrow crack, the latter requires climbing over obstacles using rope handles and handholds.

The Cederberg mountain range was formed  millions of years ago and is part of the Cape fold belt mountain range, with rock comprising of Table Mountain Sandstone of the very highest quality.
