Our wine walks, trails, and slack-pack walks or hikes are done in the famous Hemel en Aarde valley, part of the Overberg and Cape Fold-belt mountains. Because this is a wine region with many world famous wine Estates like Bouchard Finlayson and Sumaridge, Bouchard famous for its award winning Galpin Peak Pinot Noir. Almost 90% of the Hemel en Aarde wine farms and estates are IPW compliant

Babylonstoren Wine Walk

A scenic valley stroll on farm roads and single track trails alongside the impressive Babylonstoren & Kleinrivier Mountains, through olive groves and vineyards.

  • 9 km (3-4 hrs walking time)
  • Easy-moderate walk
  • Fynbos, vineyards and farms
  • Tastings at Ataraxia and Spookfontein
  • Lunch option at Spookfontein or nearby Moggs Country Cookhouse
Bouchard Fynlayson Experience

A fynbos & vineyard ramble from Bouchard Finlayson Estate the most awarded wine estate in the valley to La Vierge hilltop through to , 

  • 6-7 km (2-3 hrs walking time)
  • Easy walk
  • Protea fynbos, farm lands, Afromontane forest & vineyards
  • Wine tastings at La Vierge & Bouchard Finlayson

Sumaridge Estate Experience

Enjoy panoramic mountain views as we walk around the De Bos water supply dam for Hermanus, through vineyards, orchards and horse stud farms. Returning to the beautifully appointed Sumaridge tasting room to sample the estate wines.

  • 6-7 km (2.5-3 hrs walking time)
  • Easy -moderate walk
  • Farms, fynbos, orchards and vineyards.
  • Wine tasting at Sumaridge Estate
La Vierge Route

Start the adventure with a La Vierge wine tasting, enjoyed with a fabulous view of the Hemel & Aarde Valley wine valley. From here the trail winds through farmland and country roads to Sumaridge Wine Estate for another excellent tasting of the valleys best.

  • 6 km ( 3-4 hr total time)
  • Requires a later start time (from 10 a.m)
  • Easy – moderate walk
  • Wine tasting at La Vierge winery and Sumaridge Estate

Wine Region

On the Overberg wine walk we explore the beautiful bio diverse reserves and estates and many of the numerous vineyards scattered throughout the Hemel en Aarde valley 3 Km from the quaint town of Hermanus. Because the many vineyards in the Hemel en Aarde valley allow walks through and across their farms and offer light lunches and meals with their vineyards best.  Therefore we are able to offer the following three options to choose from.

Overberg Wine Walk

Wine Country

This is wine country – the Hemel en Aarde valley is a famous wine growing region in the Western Cape, offering wine tastings at the numerous award winning Wine Estates that will satisfy the most discerning wine connoisseur.

A Guided Overberg wine walk from 2-4 days within the fynbos, vineyards and olive groves of the Hemel & Aarde Valley in the Overberg. The Hemel & Aarde Valley starts about 3 km from Hermanus town and heads northeast to Caledon along the R 320, dotted with vineyards, berry farms and farm-stalls to visit.  

Explore the beautiful bio diverse reserves and estates , sample award winning wines and overnight in comfortable guest houses and farms. Many of the numerous vineyards scattered throughout the Hemel en Aarde valley  offer walks through and across their farms and offer light lunches and meals with their vineyards best. Its possible to do day walks with lunch stops or longer hikes of one day or longer with dinner and overnight accommodation at the wine estates or guest houses, self catering chalets or B&B’s. Overberg Wine Hike

Hermanus as a base

If you prefer to enjoy the option of hiking the vineyards and olive groves of the Hemel & Aarde Valley during the day, and also enjoying the night life of the many open-air restaurants and coffee shops.  With the possibility of seeing our annual visitors the Southern Right Whale, we can arrange accommodation in one of the many hotels or B and B’s.

Hermanus also has an abundance of other marine life to enjoy, Brydes, Minkie and Humpback  Whales, Bottelnose and common Dolphins, pods of over 500 have been seen feeding from the Cliff Path. Southern Right Whale Another option to consider is the many exciting cycling routes the area has to offer in the Hemel & Aarde Valley, we have a very well equipped cycle shop where one is able to hire a mountain bike and equipment required to suit your needs.

Africansunroad Cancellation and Refund Policy

Cancellation by the Client
CANCELLATION OF CONFIRMED BOOKINGS,  CHARGES RELATING TO CANCELLATION
& REFUND (IF APPLICABLE)
If the client wants to cancel a confirmed booking, the client must notify Africansunroad by email, receipt of which must be confirmed by africansunroad with an acceptance email. Africansunroad reserves the right to levy a cancellation fee as follows:
All cancellation requests for confirmed bookings are subject to the following
provisions.
1. Confirmed bookings, which are cancelled 60 days or more prior to the booked arrival
date, shall be refunded in an amount equal to 75% of the deposit paid.
2. Confirmed bookings, which are cancelled within 45 days prior to the scheduled arrival
date, shall be refunded in an amount equal to 50% of the deposit paid.
3. Confirmed bookings, which are cancelled within 30 days of the booked arrival dates
shall not qualify for a refund or credit.
4. The Client shall forfeit 100% of the total cost for any non-arrival.
Cancellation by Africansunroad
Force Majeure:  Africansunroad reserves the right to suspend, postpone or terminate a tour if circumstances beyond our control arise, make the tour inadvisable, impracticable, illegal, dangerous or impossible. This includes but is not limited to forces of nature (extreme weather conditions) as well as national and global security or medical emergencies (e.g. epidemic or pandemic outbreak) and conduct of third parties for whom neither the Company nor the Client is responsible, such as mass cancellations of tours due to a force majeure event occurring.
In the event of the above occurring, Africansunroad will do everything in its power to reschedule the tour to an alternate and suitable date within a reasonable time frame. Africansunroad guarantees that all monies received from the Client shall be safeguarded and may be reapplied towards a different tour at the Client’s discretion.
Please note there will be no refunds in terms of this clause and the Company shall not be liable for costs incurred by the Client outside of the actual cost of the tour paid to the Company, i.e. the Company shall not be liable for flights, accommodation etc. that the Client had to cancel due to the force majeure event.
PLEASE NOTE that the “FORCE MAJEURE” clause, as in the above, supersedes ALL other rules in terms of cancellations or refund policies.
