Disa Pools
This is a ‘must do’ hike if you are in the Cederberg Sanddrif area.
Because the pools can be accessed from a few directions, so we chose to do the out and back hike which is approximately 9.5 kilometres long. The Disa Pools can also be reached from the Maltese Cross if one knows the correct route to take, but then obviously the total hiking distance is much longer. Remember it is never advisable to hike alone or without suitable equipment such as warm clothes, a rain jacket, enough food and water. We hiked with a lady that previously hike with a group that attempted to hiked from the Maltese Cross along a different return route that linked with the Disa Pools hike. The group got lost and ended up sleeping on the trail without adequate equipment and food.
Getting there
From the car park the hike to Disa Pools is very easy and almost flat except for a few boulders and outcrops to negotiate. There are a few water crossings where boulder hopping is required to keep the boots dry. The path follows the river for most of the route once one leaves the car park area. We came across quite a large pool before we got to the actual Disa Pools, where we were treated to three great specimens of the Disa Uniflora.
It was about 1.5 kilometres further that was saw the actual Disa Pools with the waterfall and stunningly clear water. The swim in the Disa pool was exhilarating, the cool clear fresh water is refreshing.
